Money Monday: Make, Keep, Enjoy, Move — Week of September 28

Happy last Monday of Selfcare September, sis. We’ve spent a month proving that taking care of yourself doesn’t have to cost a fortune — and today we close it out with the most self-care move of all: turning the stuff you’re not using into money you can use.

If September was about rest and resets, October is about the audit — what stays, what goes, what needs to change. Today’s edition is the bridge. Clearing your space and recovering your coins is the perfect way to walk into next week’s Life Audit month with a lighter load and a fatter starting balance.

The average home has hundreds of dollars of sellable items sitting in drawers, closets, and that one cabinet you avoid. You don’t need to Marie Kondo the whole house. You need one drawer and one hour this week.

Where to sell what:

  • Clothes, shoes, bags: Poshmark and Mercari. Brand-name pieces move fastest — take photos in natural light, list measurements, price to sell within 14 days.
  • Furniture, bulk, local: Facebook Marketplace. No shipping, cash in hand, and the buyer picks it up. Old furniture is the single fastest category to convert.
  • Electronics and old phones: marketplace listings for top dollar, or instant-cash kiosk options when speed matters more than the last few dollars.

How to start small (this is the whole assignment):

  1. Pick ONE drawer or shelf. Not the whole closet. Not the whole garage.
  2. Pull out anything you haven’t touched in 12 months.
  3. Photograph your three most sellable items tonight.
  4. List ONE of them before Friday. One listing, live, done.

The point isn’t to become an eBay store. It’s to prove the pipeline works — item out, money in. Once you’ve done it once, October’s Life Audit gets dramatically easier, because you’ll already know your stuff has a cash value you can summon on demand.

Self-care for September, security for October. A credit freeze locks your credit file so nobody — including identity thieves — can open new accounts in your name. By federal law, freezing and unfreezing your credit at all three bureaus (Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion) is completely free, and it does not affect your credit score.

Why it belongs in a Money Monday: the average identity-theft headache costs victims real hours and real money, and a freeze is the single cheapest prevention that exists. You lift it whenever you actually need credit — applying for a car loan, a new card — and it’s typically lifted within an hour when you request it online.

Each bureau keeps its own freeze, so set it at all three. Have your freeze PINs somewhere safe (password manager or a physical file — not a note in your phone titled “PINs”).

Something new I learned. Before you spend $40 a head on a fall outing, check your local library. Many library systems lend (see what I did there) free or discounted passes to museums, gardens, zoos, and historic sites — the same attractions charging full price at the door. One library card, a reservation, and a fall foliage Saturday that costs you gas money.

It’s the Selfcare September message one last time: the best recharges aren’t the expensive ones. Call your library or check its website under “museum passes” — systems vary, but where it exists, it’s the best deal in town. The more you know.

Set a timer for 10 minutes. Here’s the drill:

  1. Pick your drawer (1 min). The junk drawer counts.
  2. Sort into three piles (5 min): Keep, Toss, Sell. No deliberating — if you have to think about it that hard, it’s Sell.
  3. Photograph your top 3 sellables (3 min). Natural light, clean background, done.
  4. Write down your one-listing goal (1 min): “One item live by Friday, October 2.”

Success looks like this: by Friday you have one live listing and a number written down for what you expect it to sell for. That number is your first Life Audit data point. Next Monday, we start the audit for real.

Selfcare September taught us that rest is productive. October is going to teach us that clarity is profitable. Start today with one drawer, and by the time the Life Audit starts next week, you’ll already have proof that your decisions turn into dollars. Clear the drawer, freeze the credit, use the library card, and show up Monday ready to audit the whole operation. You’ve got this. 💗
